The holidays don’t officially start until you’ve decked your tree to the nines. It only makes sense that your nails follow suit. We asked Ria Lopez of Ria Nailz (who is the Michelangelo of nail art) to give us ornament-inspired designs. She gifted us cool Christmas trees and sassy Santa belt buckles.
Ria Nailz, 141 India Street, at Manhattan Avenue, Brooklyn (718-383-2150 or facebook.com).
Step 1: Start with the belt buckle. Apply two coats of red as a base (we used Essie Jelly Apple). Once dry, use a white polish like OPI Alpine Snow to paint wide vertical lines from the base of each nail to its tip; fill in the half oval at the top.
Essie Jelly Apple is available at target.com, $8; OPI Alpine Snow is available at beautyencounter.com, $7.
Step 2: Using a black polish, such as Essie’s Licorice, paint another line horizontally across the nail to create a belt effect. Wait for the line to dry, then use a gold nail art pen or polish, such as Mattesse’s, to draw a small buckle inside the line.
Essie Licorice is available at essie.com, $8; Mattesse Elite Nail Art Solid Gold is available at rickysnyc.com, $3.
Step 3: Tackle the tree design. Polish nails with Alpine Snow. Use green and brown nail pens (such as these from Laqa & Co. and Sally Hansen) to draw the tree and trunk.
Laqa & Co. nail art pens are available at dermstore.com; Sally Hansen nail art pens are available at drugstore.com, $7 each.
Step 4: Decorate the trees by dipping a toothpick into nail glue and using it to transfer tiny jewels and stars to nails. We like Cina’s assorted rhinestones and All Season’s glue.
Cina Dial-a-Gem kit is available at sallybeauty.com, $10; All Season instant nail glue is available at sallybeauty.com, $1.
Leave this one to a professional armed with snowflake stickers, rhinestones, Calgel, glitter, and toothpicks (for painstakingly arranging the Star of David, of course). Thanks to Japanese nail artist Reiho, a great miracle happened here.
Sakura, 35 East 1st Street, between First and Second Avenues, New York City (212-387-9161 or nailspasakura.com).
Christmas colors are anything but subtle. So we asked Maria at Lali Lali Salon to design us a pattern as fun as a holiday sweater party, without the tinsel treatment. We think she nailed it.
Lali Lali Salon, 650 Broadway, third floor, New York City (212-228-2611 or lalilalisalon.com).
Step 1: Apply a nourishing green tea base coat, such as Sally Hansen’s.

Sally Hansen Nail Nutrition Green Tea + Bamboo nail strengthener is available at ulta.com, $8; Ginger + Liz Blowin’ Money Fast is available at gingerandliz.com, $12.
Step 3: With a thin brush and white French-tip polish (we used Essie Blanc), paint a chevron line across the middle of each nail.
Essie Blanc is available at essie.com, $8.
Step 4: Use the same brush to add ten to twelve dots in white and an accent color (we used silver glitter) on both sides of the stripe. Finish with a quick-dry top coat, such as Seche Vite, to seal the deal.
Ciaté Paint Pots Fit for a Queen is available at sephora.com, $15; Seche Vite Dry Fast top coat is available at rickysnyc.com, $10.

Have you been good this year? If so, you deserve little wrapped presents — on your nails. The technicians at Valley were the elves of this scenario.
Valley, 198 Elizabeth Street, between Spring and Prince Streets, New York City (212-274-8985 or valleynyc.com).
Step 1: Apply a base coat. Let dry completely.
Step 2: Decide which nails you want to be the gifts. Paint them white (Essie makes a good one), let dry, and repeat. For the other nails, go with your favorite red. We used China Glaze’s Salsa.
Essie blanc nail polish, essie.com, $8; China Glaze Salsa is available at soap.com, $7.
Step 3: On the white nails, use a small brush to paint an off-center, lowercase T in red (again, China Glaze’s Salsa) or green (we used Mattese Elite’s Edgy Green). Once it’s dry, paint a contrasting bow (red on green/green on red) where the lines intersect.
Mattese Elite Edgy Green is available at rickysnyc.com, $3.
Step 4: If you’re feeling ambitious, use the smallest brush you can find to paint seams along the edges of each T in a contrasting color. Outline the bow.
Step 5: Apply any good finishing polish, such as Sally Hansen’s Insta-Dri antichip top coat.
Sally Hansen’s Insta-Dri antichip top coat is available at soap.com, $6.
