Little Ones' Takes on the Mushy Stuff

Love: Ain’t it grand? Except when it’s not — and you have to stay in bed, because small things (minivan commercials, the store being out of Cool Ranch Doritos, happy couples) make you sob.

To help us remember when it was all cupids and hearts, we enlisted the help of some children, all 5 to 8 years old. We asked them about everything from whom they love (and if they have boyfriends/girlfriends) to how to mend a broken heart.

One little girl, who was initially shy, boldly proclaimed she’d recently seen her parents kissing — on the lips. Another said she doesn’t want to get married unless it’s to her little brother.

Which should be enough to get us through Valentine’s Day, with or without chips.

So the release of the latter’s amazing new CD/DVD Live in London was the perfect excuse to meet her — and find out what she’s really like. With video camera in tow, we asked her about everything from karaoke to movies she’s embarrassed she hasn’t seen.

As for the album, we’ll go ahead and say if you’ve never been to one of her concerts (and seen her perform songs like “Fidelity,” “Us,” and “Eet”), it’s almost just as great.

It’s the day before Thanksgiving and our brains are stuffing. And turkey, pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes, candied yams, honey baked ham … well, you get the point.

But we know this holiday’s not just about food but also about gratitude. So on a beautiful day last week, we walked around New York and asked people what they’ll be thankful for tomorrow. We were incredibly touched by everyone’s answers — and hope you will be, too.

DIY: a Florist-Worthy Deli Bouquet

Your guests are due in ten, and you’re shoving a fistful of wilty deli flowers into a vase.

Those bodega blooms have more potential than you might think. In today’s video, renowned artist/floral designer Katsuya Nishimori — formerly of Takashimaya Floral and cofounder of the recently opened Florisity in the Flatiron — has tips for making a beautiful French-inspired arrangement for less than $25. Really, you’ll be amazed how good a deli bouquet can look.

Of course, we can’t discount the pros of going to a florist (more variety, bigger blooms, longer flower life, and the magic touch). But if you can fool one or two people in the meantime, consider it a success.

Disconnect from Desire, the sophomore LP from indie electronic band School of Seven Bells, falls into category B. Twin sisters Alejandra and Claudia Deheza and bandmate Benjamin Curtis have amazing pipes and lyrics that hypnotize.

In today’s video, we hang out with the trio at a peacefully deserted urban escape (a dock along the East River in Brooklyn) as they perform a stripped-down version of our favorite song, “Windstorm.”
