Slice of Heaven
Slice Pizzeria Opens

Pizza. It satisfies late-night cravings. It goes great with beer. It’s been immortalized in song (“When the moon hits your eye …”). It’s the state food of New York (well, almost).
There is nothing it can’t do (including making your face look like pepperoni).
What if there were a magical world where pizza was good for you? What if that magical world were called the Upper East Side?
The newly minted Slice, a start-up by a group of green twenty-somethings, makes delicious pizza that won’t drench your face or stomach with grease. Healthy alternatives include crusts (whole wheat, herb, spelt), cheese (soy, rice, and organic mozzarellas), and meat toppings (free-range chicken, organic sausage).
Reinventing the pizza wheel includes reshaping it, so the pies are rectangular. (Your box will finally fit down the garbage chute. Hooray!) Individual slices are served as bite-size triangles.
Stop by to check out the space: exposed white brick, old-world black tile, bamboo floors. Prefer ordering in? The delivery guys are actually pretty young things wielding pepper spray. And they’ll fly all the way from 42nd to 96th on bikes brandishing the Slice flag.
The flag of a brave new world.
Slice, 1413 Second Avenue, between 73rd and 74th Streets (212-249-4353 or sliceperfect.com).
