Cartoon character tats work for Marc Jacobs and thirtysomething Wonder Wheel operators, but SpongeBob isn’t part of your body art plan.
We’ve got an inkling that artist Amanda Wachob will be. For the past twelve years, she has been leaving her indelible mark on NYC through a painterly style of tattooing that, at times, perfectly mimics brushstrokes.
Wachob likes penny slot machines, chocolate cigarettes, and sticking her gum under the table, but she’ll work with you to achieve whatever you like and render it permanent — from a faceted diamond on a ring finger or a mariachi band on a shoulder to colorful Rothko-esque abstracts.
Catch her at Fun City and Daredevil, where she’ll expertly ink you with splotches and splashes ($300 per hour) that seem real enough to wash off with soap and water.
Get a walk-in consultation with Wachob, Sunday, noon-12:30 p.m., at Daredevil Tattoo, 174 Ludlow Street, between Houston and Stanton Streets (212-533-8303 or daredeviltattoo.com); Thursday, noon-12:30 p.m., at Fun City Tattoo, 94 Saint Marks Place, between First Avenue and Avenue A (212-353-8282 or funcitytattoo.com). Amanda gave me my first tattoo last year...it's so pretty and exactly what I wanted ! I have nothing but positive things to say about the whole experience.

amanda wachob did a tattoo for me in november 2008. about halfway through she started freehanding... it was dreadful. i spent hundreds of dollars getting a cover-up tattoo, changing a small upper arm tattoo into a half-sleeve i never wanted. i'm sorry to see you publicize and endorse this "artist's" work.

I absolutely LOVE Amanda! I've just finished my third piece with her and have already made an appointment for further work. She's now the only artist I will let touch me. Her designs are beautiful and I'm very proud to have her artwork on me. Her tattoo 'paintbrush strokes' are gorgeous and unique. I've recommended a friend to her and my friend has now said she will go to no other artist as well. I'm sorry Susan (previous review) had such a bad experience. It sucks when you do not get work you like. However, I've nothing but the highest regard for Amanda's work.
