Get a clue DC. I am quitting your emails and I have forwarded an email for my friends to do the same. Funny, most of them never even heard of DC. Promoting the selling of animals is just horrid and sad. I am NOT an animal activist, just a compassionate person. You people have NO CLUE and have really turned me off. I am glad to see that I am not the only one who is outraged!

Are you kidding!? I have 13 potbelly pigs. All started out as 'Micro's, Mini's and Teacup pigs' and today all are over 150 lbs! There is no such thing as a micro, mini or teacup potbelly pig. You are shown a small baby, and, if you get to see the 'parents' of this baby they are usually babies themselves so they are also small. A female comes into heat at 3 months and males are able to impregnate a female when they are 2 months old. They continue to grow until 4 or 5 years old. Some think 3 to 4 years but mine didn't stop until between 4 and 5. They are intelligent and easily bored. They can open cupboards, refrigerators, pull up linoleum, carpets and tear out walls. Pigs can make great pets but not for the average person and definitely not someone in an apartment. They need a yard where they can root and play. Please, take the sale of potbelly pigs off your website. And never try to sell any live animal. Thank you. Carolyn

Wow!! Was looking for some unique items and ran into a maelstrom. I'll refrain from commenting on the matter since what had to said has been said. So in light of what we really came to DailyCandy for, I like some of the unique gift ideass. This is what separates the selective shopper from the main stream department store shopper... hope that didn't come off mighter than thouish... wasn't meant to be, LOL To add to the wonderful array of items here, I recently purchased some customized pendants for my nieces and nephews and received them yesterday from this shop: http://www.etsy.com/shop/craftyaddictions I think the pictures on the sight are lacking, it's clear that they don't use a professional photographer (likely because it's a mom and pop ran store), but the received pendants were exqusitely cute. You can't beat a customized pendant for the price. Mine are stocking stuffers, since now a days the main gift is an electronic contraption... they start so early ...

Wow...we're both speechless and extremely disappointed! After decades in the animal rescue "industry", you would think little would surprise us. We've seen the very best in mankind and also the very worst. It's absolutely amazing, though, that a quality communication site like Daily Candy would take the energy to promote the inevitable death sentences of innocent animals by creating awareness of this travesty. Just look at the feedback you're receiving on this "news offering". Is this what you're readers are looking for? We hope you will realize your error and retract this feature before additional animals are harmed.

It totally irresponsible and revolting that DailyCandy would suggest giving a pig for a gift. Pigs, large and small, are extremely intelligent animals that need care and become very large regardless of their original size. Most people do not have the space or the knowledge to raise a pig. Pigs like to be in the company of other pigs and to deprive them of that is cruel. Shame on you for suggesting a live animal as a gift. Receiving an animal is a lifetime commitment for caring for that animal, not a whim that can be discarded when it becomes inconvenient.

This is simply the worst idea ever! What are people going to do when they tire of these pigs? Dump them somewhere or take them to a shelter, that's what. Shelters are packed with wonderful cats and dogs desperate for a home. Why not promote that instead?

Let me just tell you about my favorite story of the adorable 180lb pig that was hungry one day and decided to open the refrigerator, and took the door off his just his nose. These are far from an impractical gift. Yes they are adorable and loving and live to be 25 years of age. And you can rescue a pig for free. Never buy always rescue any purebred animal you want there are plenty in need of a home

I find it hard to believe that DailyCandy is so utterly irresponsible as to promote giving ANY animal as a Christmas gift, never mind one with so many needs as a pig. How long will it be before the majority, if not all of the new owners of these pigs find that potty training a pig, and providing it with a warm comfy place to live, plus all the correct handling needed to have a good companion instead of a dangerous one is just too much bother? There are sanctuaries already desperate to find homes for unwanted piglets and adult pigs which were unwanted as they grew out of the "cute" stage - if someone really wants a pig, they should adopt, not fall for the lines of a breeder who must know that her or his pigs will NOT stay "teacup" sized as they mature.

This is crazy. Don't they remember what happens every Easter, people rush out and by baby chicks and bunnies, and every year they all end up neglected or turned over to a shelter, or even killed! A live animal should NEVER be promoted as a gift. A pig none the less, one of the most intelligent creatures on earth considered a Christmas present. Not only that but to promote a mini pig that most likely is a complete lie, these pigs have not been around long enough to produce a miniature size, it takes hundreds of years to create a new breed of animal if done responsibly. Potbellied pigs have not been domesticated long enough to be breeding this small with out it being cruel. This is terrible and it should be removed immediately!

I must echo what the other commenters have said above. It's reprehensible enough that animals are bred and sold like products, tormenting the breeder animals and costing the lives of the shelter/rescued animals, but to have that very sale of animals promoted by DailyCandy is quite tragic and negligent. Please remove this gift idea immediately!

How irresponsible to promote pets as gifts, especially pet pigs! Are you going to be taking in and caring for all these pigs when the novelty wears off? I think not! The cost and care will fall on the shoulders of the sanctuaries that are already overfilled. Be responsible in what you promote. If you want a great gift try www.webstarts.com/gogiggles Try a book like The Inner World of Farm Animals (and learn a little something), or the Conscious Cook or maybe some vegan chocolates. Those can be tossed in the trash if not wanted. The pig can't.

I find it absolutely ridiculous that your company would think its a good idea to offer the sale on these pigs for a little girl's christmas gift. This is not like going to the local animal shelter and picking out a puppy or a kitten. Pigs are a different species completely and have a very different diet, need a different living environment, have different habits, and have different parasites and illnesses and all of these things need to be taken into consideration. Theses pigs can live for many years so just like the bunny that was given to the girl at Easter time that she never takes care of and the mom is sick of doing all the chores, this pig will end up at a shelter or worse, dying from neglect.

By promoting a sale of a pig for a gift, you will cost many of them their lives. Breeders lie to make a sale and put money in their pockets. Check out sanctuaries and see how many across the US are now living in one because they got to big or were not the pet their thought they would be. It is very irresponsible to run and advertise this kind of gift. Animals don't make good gifts unless the receiver has done their homework and know just how big they can get. Please consider the life you are endangering.

Posted by mswagner222 on

PLEASE please!! don't promote a piglet or any other live animal as a "gift". Proper pet ownership means a commitment for the LIFE of the pet, which can be 10, 15 or 20 years! This is a decision that can only be made by the person that will be making the pet a part of their life. Daily Candy is totally irresponsible to be jumping on the bandwagon and promoting the ownership of these piglets as pets. Five years from now, shelters will be overflowing with all of the unwanted piglets that were given on a whim to an irresponsible pet owner.

This is the most benighted "gift" I've ever heard of. In this economy, in this day and age of advanced consciousness, is Royal Dandie for real? I know the little guy is called a "Royal Dandie" but if that's also the name of the company, let's hope it has alternative plans for staying in business. Oh, we've heard that babies are forced to have babies so the sellers can show the parents (before they grow up) and tell buyers that the little pigs never get larger than their parents. The good news is that it won't be hard to find people who won't participate in this. The company's challenge will be to find people who will.

A pig is not for everyone, and you don't know if the person you are giving the gift to is going to actually want a pig. If you really want to do something nice, sponsor one at a pig sanctuary in that person's name, or if you really want a pig, adopt one that is in need of a home. They are very loving, intelligent creatures that don't deserve to spend their lives in sanctuaries. And research the mini-pigs. There is no such thing.

Posted by megnmeg on

Please do not promote the sale of living creatures as novelties. It is shocking to see a species that has been so overpopulated advertised this way on this site. I urge you to remove it.

Posted by susiecoston on

I cannot believe that you would promote the sale of a living being on your site- very irresponsible. I was actually shocked when I saw it. I would hope you realize your huge error in judgement and take this down immediately- and maybe do a little research on how many potbellied pigs end up at shelters, going through slaughter lines, or pulled from homes for abuse and neglect. Get real!

Posted by VegasPigPets on

Unbelievable! Not only don't you not get your facts straight before promoting these "world" smallest pigs, which they are just starved inbred unhealthy piglets... I can do that to a human child, too! Is that next? Starve anything long enough and you can reduce their size! But also, why would you promote giving any pet as a gift?! So they can end up in some rescue, shelter or sanctuary somewhere? Any pet, like a child, should be taken on with thought, preparation and commitment! Uggh, it's irresponsible reporting like this that fills our sanctuaries and causes more animals to meet a death worse than life!
