Case No. 1221: Federal Donuts, South Philly’s latest to-go joint.
Location: An unassuming residential corner at Second and Manton streets.
Culprit: Chef Michael Solomonov of Zahav and Percy Street Barbecue.
Evidence: Highly suspicious amounts of flour, frying vats, and a Donut Robot.
Report: Found in possession of just-made confections, either dusted to order with sugar blends (chile-lime, vanilla-lavender) or piped with filling (Nutella-tahini-pomegranate, Key lime). When donuts are coupled with the shop’s special blend of PT’s Coffee Roasting Co. beans, caffeine junkies don’t stand a chance.
Officers on the night beat witnessed several accomplices ducking in for twice-fried Korean chicken covered in savory glazes or served crunchy with a sprinkling of seasoned salt (buttermilk ranch, za’atar).
Warning: Authorities have found both poultry and donuts to be habit-forming. They’re so good, it’s almost illegal.
