As delightful as pop-ups are, it’s a downer when they disappear.
Count on a permanent upper with Alex Stadler’s new brick-and-mortar.
The author, illustrator, textile designer, and brains behind last holiday season’s P.POD describes his subterranean boutique (spot it by the celestial scene painted outside) as an “exalted five-and-dime store” with finds from Kentucky to New Paltz to Florence.
Inspired by European spaces that serve as both atelier and retail shop, Stadler set up his studio behind a curtain. Rifle through racks of vintage Paul Smith and Comme de Garçons button-downs, slip on a pair of Lino’s candy bright shoes made from Guatemalan textiles, or order a custom iPad cover cut from marbleized Italian paper and wrap it in ribbon by the yard.
Even friends heading out of town know to leave room in their suitcases for potential inventory (recently, a stack of French journals with animals on their covers).
We just love surprises.
