Sugar Shack

Candy Alley Candy Store

You gotta love a holiday that, at heart, has no higher purpose than the unabashed quest for candy.

But that doesn’t mean it can’t be a spiritual experience. This Halloween season check out Candy Alley. Nestled in a row of Brentwood shops, the quaint-as-can-be boutique has been family-owned and -operated since 1976. Enter stealthily through Pulp and Hide (a high-end stationery store) and you’ll be greeted by three charming proprietresses (sisters Helene, Ann, and Joan Fernbacher) as well as the delish aroma of specialty chocolates, gummy bears, and Australian licorice.

Now don’t be alarmed if you find yourself tussling over a bag of sweets with Tom Hanks. The place has been hot with the A-list for years, thanks to the beautiful gift baskets and outrageous custom gingerbread houses. If Tom — or any other celeb — does give you trouble, don’t back down. You know your rights.

Life, liberty, and the pursuit of Jelly Bellys.
