Warm and Woolly

Winter is coming to a close and there’s no better way to celebrate its almost overness than with a stuffed woolly mammoth.

Maybe you’re all, “I don’t mess with plush toys.” But we say, “Yes, you will — and you’ll like it.”

Port Richmond-based Rachel Lang lovingly creates her mammoths, and just like you, they’re covered in felted, natural fibers that form a fabric-like pelt. After she constructs a pattern, she embroiders the face, adds eyes, and hand sews everything together. The time it takes to create an animal varies from a few weeks to a couple of months, and no two are exactly alike.

Lately, Lang’s been into mythical creatures like gnomes and Loch Ness monsters. Her future plans include snow leopards, dodo birds, and a griffin or two.

Which, incidentally, are perfect for the end of summer.
