When you’re craving Southern comfort, venture no farther than the city center.
1. Google Maps yourself to Boxing Room, where Citizen Cake once stood.
2. Note original 1800s-era Douglas fir-slatted walls, handsome steel beams, and a meandering zinc counter.
3. Head straight for said counter, then idle on a faux alligator stool while downing one of twenty beers on tap or a glass of small production wine listed on massive chalkboards.
4. Steer toward the raw bar for Louisiana-sourced crab, shrimp, crawfish, and oysters.
5. Pull into a booth to throw back Cajun boiled peanuts, deep-fried alligator (tastes like chicken!), and chef Justin Simoneaux’s grilled Monterey squid.
6. Tour Simoneaux’s Louisiana heritage with traditional dishes: Southern fried chicken, classic seafood gumbo, and a po’boy well worth the prices at the pump.
7. Top it off with bananas foster cake and bourbon ice cream while you prolong the trip home until the 2 a.m. close.
Boxing Room, 399 Grove Street, at Gough Street (415-430-6590 or boxingroomsf.com). Opens tomorrow.
