When a stylish little birdie told us about a new sewing studio and production house with its own clothing line in SoMa (yes, SoMa — no L.A. trip needed), we hit the road.
Nestled on Clara Street, The Factory by The Evans Group is a design space overflowing with a la mode goods. We found buckets brimming with lacy trims and feathers, oodles of fabric spools, and — our favorite — a rainbow of candy-colored buttons. Founder Jennifer Evans welcomes seasoned designers and newbies alike to transform ideas into custom pieces or a full-on collection, with the studio’s spoils and seamstresses at your fingertips.
An offshoot of The Evans Group in L.A. (which has produced the likes of Geren Ford and Habitual), the shop’s own line is decidedly sleek. Silky maxidresses and flowy tops get an edge from leather buckles and details. Scour the racks — the pros here are collaborating with the city’s best underground designers.
Which puts them a stitch ahead.
