You prepped for cold, fog, and even the possibility of balmy weather, only to get whipped by the wind. It’s good to know you can blow indoors for a story break any day of the week.
Monday
Check in for a 30-minute literary pit stop at Sprout San Francisco at 4 p.m. Staff members hold court in the mural playroom, regaling infants to 4-year-olds with picture books from the boutique’s shelves. 1828 Union Street (415-359-9205).
Tuesday
Story time is stylish at Giggle, which hosts an interactive event at 4 p.m. A small crowd (for 5 and under) gathers weekly for staff favorites like If You Give a Cat a Cupcake and What Moms Can’t Do, then lingers over mod crib bedding and toys. 2110 Chestnut Street (415-440-9034).
Wednesday
Beloved former nursery school teacher Sonia packs them in at neighborhood fave Bookshop West Portal at 10:30 a.m. The grandma of two knows how to draw big ears out of little pitchers. Recent reads include Press Here, Click Clack Moo, and Zero and One. She keeps them coming back with interactive songs and finger plays. 80 West Portal Avenue (415-564-8080).
Thursday
It’s a jungle inside Paxton Gate’s Curiosities for Kids, where staffers host an intimate story hour for sophisticated tykes (ages 1-4) at 11 a.m. Arty picture books from the Mission boutique’s collection are chosen to suit the crowd — and compete with the tree swings, vines, vintage toys, and scooters for their attention. At story’s end, ask for songs. The staff’s been known to break out a guitar or ukulele. 766 Valencia Street (415-252-9990).
Friday
Add some new rhymes to your nursery repertoire at Mission Bay Branch Library. The 4:30 p.m. gatherings have all the makings of preschool prep with music, stories, and finger plays led by librarian Jasmine. Stay until dinner for open playtime with the branch’s art supplies and puzzles. 960 4th Street (415-355-2838).
Now you’re covered.
