It’s been a whirlwind affair, but we’ve found the one: The Melt, open in SoMa.
June 1: Word came that Flip Video founder Jonathan Kaplan was taking his tech to lunch in the form of a press that cooks grilled cheese sandwiches in 60 seconds. When we found out Michael Mina is on (the) board, our interest was piqued.
August 17: The invite arrived for a proper tasting, featuring five types of grilled cheese and seasonal soups made with farm-fresh ingredients.
August 25: Love at first bite. The Classic’s cheddar paired with creamy tomato basil soup tasted like childhood reincarnated; the Mission’s jalapeno pepper cheese with sweet corn tortilla soup spiced things up. Off-the-menu specials (just ask) made the experience even more interesting.
Today: The secret ingredient to this relationship? Communication. Order online or via mobile, skip the line, and scan your special bar code at the counter. A high-tech mobile app (rolling out soon) will alert the chefs when you’re within one block of pick-up, so your order will be ready by the time you hit the counter.
We think it’s gonna last.
The Melt, 115 New Montgomery Street, between Mission and Minna Streets (themelt.com). New locations coming soon.
