Ah, homecoming. Usually that means football games, cursing the queen’s name (that floozy), and DFMO sessions.
Partake in a local celebration of sorts with the return of Charles Phan to the original Slanted Door outpost on Valencia, now crowned Wo Hing General Store, opening Friday.
Named for his immigrant uncle (Wo) and father’s (Hing) business, the spot serves cuisine skewed toward Chinese street food in honor of the family’s origins. Chef Michelle Mah’s plates include spicy pork and shrimp wontons, oyster egg crepes, and house-made noodles. Cocktails surprise with a far less Asian influence, as seen in Brooke Arthur’s (Prospect, Range) pina colada, daiquiri, and dry sherry punch.
Revamped by Olle Lundberg, the decor stars repurposed materials: Post up at the bowling alley bar and tables, sequestered by glass from former bus shelters, while you ogle oversize paintings by Judy North from the original restaurant.
Long live the king.
