Affordable produce for Chicago's food deserts

fresh moves charity!

Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Dominick’s, Jewel, your neighborhood grocer — the options are seemingly endless.

Unless you’re one of approximately 400,000 Chicagoans living in a food desert.

In neighborhoods where it’s exceptionally hard to find fresh produce, and choices are often limited to the processed and the packaged, Fresh Moves aims to make a change.

Tuesdays through Fridays, a bright red CTA bus-turned-mobile marketplace brings fresh, affordable fruits and veggies to Austin and North Lawndale, two neighborhoods experiencing serious produce droughts. Whatever doesn’t sell goes to homeless shelters.

In its first six months, Fresh Moves served roughly 5,000 customers, contributing to a 39 percent drop in the number of residents living in a food desert over the past five years.

Thanks to a recent partnership with the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, the bus now distributes free seeds so people can grow their own food.

Your donations can keep Chicagoans eating green.

Chew on that.
