Hopscotch Opens in Oakland

American bistro fare near the Fox Theater

Lesson Plan

Objective: Owners Kyle Itani (Yoshi’s, The Meatball Shop) and Jenny Schwarz bring an American bistro to uptown Oakland, opening Friday. Itani combines Northern California flavors with Japanese influences (in both service and style) for a cultural curriculum.

Materials: Cork checkerboard flooring, retro chairs, white tablecloths, a marble bar, and schoolhouse light fixtures.

Assignment: Study creative interpretations of hyper-local ingredients in sweet potato gnocchi, ginger-stuffed roast chicken loin, and Kirin beer-steamed clams. Complete the course with yuzu meringue pie, fresh fruit tarts, or the Domino (Scotch, amaro, blackberry, jalapeno, and lemon).

Class limit: A cozy 40, including ten red stools at the bar.

Recess: Cocktails are modern updates on the classics, with a Scotch focus, to be taken down before heading to the nearby Fox Theater.

Hopscotch to it.
