Field Guide to the Birds of North America
Name: Bachman’s Sparrow
Habitat: The East Bay
Life history: Designer Maria Volk’s catalog of crafting ventures runs the gamut from natural lip treatments to terrariums. Two years ago she transformed her DIY-driven blog, Bachman’s Sparrow, into a small business with a collection of rope necklaces. Today she’s branching out with pretty yet practical silk headbands (read: Fabric-covered elastic stops them from migrating south).
Appearance: Varies. Painted details ensure no two are alike. Accessorize an updo with a sea blue scarf sponged in aquatic tones or pull a statement-making chartreuse wrap (splashed with orange, red, and peach) over a ponytail. Feeling wild? Secure one around the brim of a hat for a playful pop of color.
Field notes: Keep a lookout for the line’s chunky, uncut mineral stone cocktail rings and whipped body butters.
Watch list rating: Red alert
Available at store.bachmanssparrow.com, $24-$26.
