When you’ve served as Michael Jackson’s personal chef, you’re familiar with PYT.
You know, pretty yum things.
Take your cue from chef Mani Niall, who opens his latest venture, Sweet Bar Bakery, today in Oakland.
Inhabiting the corner that housed the historic MacFarlane’s Candy and Ice Cream store, the bakery honors its past with butter yellow and dark brown walls, a red espresso machine, and purple accents.
Peek behind the counter, where pastry wizards craft blueberry and apple cornmeal upside-down cakes and snickerdoodles sprinkled with cardamom sugar. Vegan and gluten-free banana chocolate and cinnamon sugar fauxnuts are also available.
Wash down seasonal savory dishes (portobello mushrooms, kale, and Manchego flatbread; ginger miso chicken salad; and a ham, Gruyere, and smoked pumpkin seed pesto sandwich) with a glass of white wine from Paso Robles or a pint of Lost Coast Brewery brown ale.
Don’t stop ’til you get enough.
