Now that your sleeping companion’s evolved from stuffed to cellular, a solid eight hours is an alien concept.
Rev up your REM with out-of-this-world pillows and quilts by Carrie Vawter. The Oakland-based designer’s hand-dyed creations pull from the past (ancient mystic sites, the lost city of Atlantis) to promote prettier dreams in a way that feels anything but archaic.
Credit Vawter’s curiosity to more than just otherworldly inspiration. It took a quilting class filled with older women at a community college for the FIDM alum to call off her postgraduate sewing hiatus.
Falling hard for the imperfect creativity quilting allows, she began experimenting with a variety of dyeing techniques (bleach, black tea).
We envision the dark, wintry-tone pillows casually strewn about the bed in an ingenue’s Vermont cottage. Celestial-looking quilts, meanwhile, are an urbanite’s cozy alternative to the telescope.
We’re starry-eyed.
Available at Esqueleto, 482a 49th Street, at Telegraph Avenue, Oakland (510-629-6216 or shopesqueleto.com), $150-$1,200.
