Verbena Opens on Polk

NorCal cusine in the heart of Russian Hill

It’s not easy eating green. Options are limited, meat dishes tempt, and you wind up spending too many days juicing.

Verbena, the newest farm-focused spot from the guys behind Berkeley’s Gather, aims to ease your struggle.

Co-owner and executive chef Sean Baker’s NorCal cuisine puts local, seasonal fruits and vegetables in starring roles: beets livened up by hazelnut curds, citrus, and Treviso; carrots with verbena, Aleppo pepper, nettles, and cashews (pictured below); and turnips and sunchokes with jalapeno and habanero hummus.

High ceilings, antique Spanish doors, and Modern Farmer-after-dark attention to detail (an illuminated wall of pickling jars, wall panels made from farm soil) give the space a romantic yet rustic vibe.

After dinner, swing by the buzzy, black walnut bar for an Emerald Remedy #2 (gin, Pimm’s, yellow Chartreuse, celery, lemon, and fleur de sel).

It’s way sexier than a Vitamix.
