The Italian Job

Another Italian spot in North Beach? Um, that’s hardly news.

But hear us out: Piazza Navona, the latest restaurant to open its doors in the ‘hood, is more than just a hole-in-the-wall for you to twirl linguine di mare in.

Occupying the former site of Little Joe’s, Piazza Navona is operated by the same folks who run the nearby Bocce Cafe. With a rust-colored ceiling, faux marble detailing, and pumpkin-hued walls, the warm interior is romantic enough for you and your schmoopy, yet still spacious enough should you want to bring your entire crew. Flanked by a long bar, the exhibition kitchen only adds to the welcoming neighborhood atmosphere. And if there’s a wait, forget standing out on the street. Step into the attached bar.

If treats from the vine aren’t enough to catch your fancy, opt for the homemade pastas and sauces. The menu — traditional Italian — offers dishes like linguini di mare, chicken cacciatore, and veal scallopini. Want to live a little? Try the seven-flavor combination for two for sample-size portions of seven different entrees ( from chicken lasagna to eggplant Parmesan), or indulge in the red snapper with olive oil and lemon.

So screw Atkins. And start spreading the news.
