Meet Virginia

Morning. A brand new day. Girl opens closet, determined to find something fabulous to wear. She rummages, but sees only jeans and T-shirts, T-shirts and jeans. Her eyes glaze over. Hands on the clock tick forward. Girl panics.

End the drama and let costume designer Jennifer Welch help you get into character at Virginia Howells, her new vintage boutique in the Mission.

Outside, you’ll see a cluster of dreamy young hopefuls eyeing the miniature gold tutu in the window. Follow them inside, where red and blue Venetian deco mirrors hang behind a wooden display case stocked with finds like nouveau-Western baubles from Kansas designer Early.

Tapping sources from her eighteen years in the theater, Welch has every role covered. Act the elegant lady in an original Edwardian lace ascot or give a good Annie Hall in a pair of reworked men’s trousers trimmed with antique fabric and buttons. Other keepers include Brion Nuda’s metallic clutches, which are hand-painted to match the canvases on the walls.

So go on and be your most unique self.

After all, it’s the part you were born to play.
