Night and Day

Who you are can depend on the hour. By night, you’re the sexy young thing reviving the fine art of conversation. By day, you’re conquering the working world with your quick wit and savvy.

(Unless your nighttime self had a little too much fun. In that case, you’re the disheveled one in the corner trying not to barf.)

Mattin Noblia, the 25-year-old owner and executive chef behind North Beach tapas destination Iluna Basque, understands the dichotomy. Which is why he has just opened a daytime eatery, appropriately named Eguna Basque (translation: “Basque day”).

The ultra-casual cafe sits just around the corner from its nighttime counterpart and serves up daytime French fare. For a morning treat, try a sweet pain au chocolat or a savory quiche. A crispy croque monsieur (the famed toasted sandwich) or Eguna sampler salad — with ham, chorizo, cheese, and green peppers — is just right for lunchtime munchies. Finish with the peche melba, a delicious concoction of vanilla and peach ice cream, peach syrup, fresh peaches, and chantilly crème topping.

Add on indoor and outdoor seating, comfy couches, free wireless Internet, and a front patio, and you might find yourself lingering right up to nightfall.

And you know what happens then.
