Fish Tale

You know the story: Mermaid trades in tail for gams and moves from idyllic underwater kingdom to bustling metropolis. Mermaid gets homesick (er, seasick?). Weekend getaways to Carmel become more and more frequent. And to pass the hours at her unrewarding marketing job, she designs flowing dresses that remind her of her ocean home.

Tsumori Chisato’s whimsical spring/summer collection chronicles our landlocked heroine’s journey to the city and her subsequent yearning to return to the briny deep.

The cute but sexy pieces are constructed with inventive details, such as a removable overdress that buttons to create a balloon hem or a precious detachable pouch pocket. Airy batiste sundresses and patchwork tops practically beg you to wear them to the seashore; nautically inspired sweaters with stripes the color of conch shells and Caribbean waters will keep you stylish and warm while you battle the fog.

And the navy blue dungarees with tone-on-tone seashell pockets?

They’re enough to make any mermaid glad she upgraded to a pair of legs.
