Places to Donate

Somehow, you managed to fit in a second helping of pecan pie. Now make room in your home by donating your unwanted items to those in need. Here are five places to get rid of the clutter:

Computer Recycling Center
What: Reuse program offers computer, laptop, monitor, and television recycling free of charge and distributes refurbished items to teachers, nonprofits, and fundraisers.
Why: Santa’s got you down for a new black iBook.
How: Take recyclables to drop-off centers Mon.-Sat. or to special events held Thurs. & Sat.

Recycle for Breast Cancer
What:
National program recycles cell phones, ink cartridges, PDAs, and other items. You’ll be keeping electronic waste out of landfills, and proceeds go to breast cancer research.
Why: Tech it or leave it.
How: Collect items, box them, and a prepaid shipping label will be sent to you at no cost.
Where: 200 Purdue Rd., ste. 1018, San Ramon (925-735-7203).

San Francisco General Hospital Volunteer Center
What:
Give away stacks of old magazines to hospital waiting rooms.
Why: Retracing the downfall of Nick and Jess = escapism at its finest.
How: Drop them off at the volunteer center for distribution. Mon. & Fri., 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; Tues.-Thurs., noon-4:30 p.m.
Where: 1001 Potrero Ave., b/t 22nd & 23rd Sts. (415-206-8193).

Wardrobe for Opportunity
What:
Help low-income job seekers dress for success by donating suits and work attire.
Why: You already landed the job.
How: Take dry-cleaned clothes in basic colors (black, brown, navy, and white) on hangers to drop-off centers. Shoes, jewelry, handbags, and new stockings also accepted.
Where: 570 14th St., Oakland (510-463-4100). For drop-off locations, go to wardrobe.org.

Working Essentials
What: Donate shampoo, soap, and datebooks to help the homeless look and feel more confident while seeking employment.
Why: Finally. A reason for hoarding hotel toiletries.
How: Clean out bathroom cupboards and take it all to drop-off centers. Or start a barrel drive at the gym or office.
