You’ve been planning a trip to Machu Picchu since siempre. Too bad the odds of getting time off are as good as the Incas’ were against the Conquistadores.
In the meantime, ride your imaginary llama to Bernal Heights for Piqueo’s restaurant opening today.
The warm red hues and open kitchen might fool you into thinking you’ve stepped into chef Carlos Altamirano’s casa for dinner. And the menu changes seasonally, always reflecting contemporary Peruvian cuisine with a twist.
Ceviches and starters are meant to be shared. That means yuca balls stuffed with mozzarella, steamed sweet corn dough topped with shrimp curry sauce, and tamalitos (a fabled hangover cure). Mains like tender grilled pork chop with adobo sauce go down easy with reasonably priced South American wines.
Y por supuesto, save room for homemade postre.
It may not be the Andes, but your taste buds will be elevated to new heights.
Piqueo’s, 830 Cortland Avenue, between Gates and Ellsworth Streets (415-282-8812 or piqueos.com).
