Dire Straits

"Trouble," by Kate Christensen

The holidays in a nutshell: If life is going well, they’re golden. But if you’re down and out, they totally blow.

So it’s no surprise that Josie Dorvillier has a life-altering epiphany at a Christmas party in the beginning of Kate Christensen’s new fictionary tale, Trouble.

With utter decidedness, Josie (a fortysomething mom and psychotherapist living in Manhattan) leaves her lifeless marriage with a longing to find her lost soul.

Days before New Year’s, her friend Raquel (an L.A. rock star running from the paparazzi) begs Josie to join her in Mexico City while she hides out. As cigarettes, Latin men, and tequila thicken their bond, they spread their wings while leaning on each other for support.

You’ll laugh until the bittersweet ending, when you’ll cry.

Just like when Aunt Minnie asked why you’re still single at Passover.
