Most fro yo is the equivalent of a celeb impersonator.
In other words, a piss-poor substitute for the real thing.
But Fraîche, which just opened on Fillmore Street in Pac Heights, brings back a time when frozen yogurt was, well, yogurt.
Owner Patama Gur handcrafts exquisite artisan yogurt in the European style from local Clover organic milk and her own probiotic culture. The good stuff is available both fresh and frozen (the latter in natural, Valhrona chocolate, and soy varieties) and even toppings are a step above (local honeys, fresh fruit, homemade mochi, organic brownies).
The Barefoot Contessa-meets-the-West-Coast vibe is courtesy of designer Lauren Geremia (Bloodhound, Taverna Aventine), with traditional kitchen cabinetry, ceramic bowls, and milk bottles to evoke the feeling of an actual home.
