Nostalgia has its place, but we bet Pac Heights residents aren’t mourning the loss of La Salsa on the corner of Cali and Fillmore. In its place, and opening for business today, is Tacobar, an urbane taqueria that’s got more than a few upgrades from its predecessor. There’s a tasty menu with the usual suspects (burritos, quesadillas, horchata) plus chile-infused tortilla soup, Caesar salad with avocado and cotija, and owner Jack Schwartz’s spin on the taco: the especial, a crispy cheese-lined corn tortilla. Daily-changing aguas frescas (hibiscus, mango) and Mexican-inspired ice creams (tequila, sweet corn, caramelized sweet potato) seal the deal. A makeover courtesy of Geremia Design incorporates local eco chic (reclaimed cypress from the Presidio, Flora Grubb plants), color (bright tiles, cherry red stools, lime green chairs), and an SF artist’s modern, Mexican-themed collage. And unlike La Salsa, you can sit outside sans embarrassment. Tacobar, 2401 California Street, at Fillmore Street (415-674-7745).
