We returned from our first visit to Buenos Aires with a suitcase full of amazing clothes and a mysterious tattoo of a sparerib. After going back for seconds, we’re happy to report that not much has changed in the awesome department. There are still loads of great shops, nighttime hangouts, and inspiring food. Andale!
Mi Casa Es Su Casa
Rest your laurels at Krista Hotel Boutique (Bonpland 1665; +54-11-4771-4697), a perfectly refurbished early 1900s house. Hotel Babel (Balcarce 946; +54-11-4300-8300) has nine quaint rooms, a garden, library, and bar.
Cover Your Culo
Argentinians are fashion-forward risk-takers at heart. Follow their lead at Lupe (El Salvador 4657; +54-11-4833-0730), a charming shop in trendy Palermo Viejo. Paula Cahen D’Anvers (Honduras 4888) has crisp, tailored button-downs and sophisticated androgynous looks. Slip on a pair of handcrafted leather shoes at Mishka (El Salvador 4673; +54-11-4833-6566) and feel extra special — only a few pairs of each style exist.
And Then There’s Beef
For real-deal Argentine fare, hit local haunt El Desnivel (Defensa 855; +54-11-4300-9081), a classic parrilla serving steaks the size of your thigh for less than $10. Go swanky at Osaka (Soler 5608; +54-11-4775-6964), a Peruvian-Japanese fusion joint with an inspired cocktail program. Herbivores can wash down a heaping platter of quinoa risotto with fresh mandarin juice at organic spot Bio (Humboldt 2199; +54-11-4774-3880); the veggie appetizer sampler at boho Artemisia (José Antonio Cabrera 3877; +54-11-4863-4242) entices even the staunchest meat lovers.
Sleepless in B.A.
Oh, the nightlife. Show ’em what you’ve got at the Ciudad Cultural Konex (Sarmiento 3131; +54-11-4864-3200), a gigantic outdoor club with a killer musical lineup. On Mondays, shake what your madre gave you to all-percussion band La Bomba de Tiempo. At speakeasy-themed Thames 878 (Thames 878; +54-11-4773-1098), recline on comfy couches, groove to American oldies, and order from a lengthy cocktail and whiskey list. For a laid-back beer with friends or strangers, there’s Post Street Bar (Thames 1885), a gritty, multilevel hangout with stenciled walls, drinking deck, and small exhibition space. Thursday is free pizza day. Need we say más?
