Stress Relief for Moms

kabuki springs and spa!

Locking yourself in the bathroom with your iPhone to get away? Mommy will be out in just a minute, Petunia.

Time to find an actual hour for yourself — and the wherewithal to spend it someplace special.

We nominate Kabuki Springs & Spa, a beloved San Francisco bathhouse inspired by the stress-shedding bathing ritual of the Japanese onsen and tucked in the same building as the Kabuki Theater. This is one break that will change your outlook and mood in record time — and for less than the cost of your monthly texting plan.

It starts with a Japanese “shower” (sit down to wash, salt scrub, and rinse); followed by a dry sauna, steam room, and cold bath; with a final deep soak in a very hot pool. The variation in temperature (hot-cold-hot) calms a rattled nervous system. Even yours.

If you’ve managed to wrangle a little more time, Kabuki’s massage therapists will happily work the kinks out of your sore neck and back, provide reasonably priced prenatal massage (ask for Jenofeve), or indulge you in a fragrant poultice massage — reminding you how important it is that you learn to receive. And we don’t mean text messages.

Kabuki Springs & Spa, 1750 Geary Boulevard, at Fillmore Street (415-922-6000 or kabukisprings.com). Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday are ladies only; Tuesday is co-ed, so you’ll need a swimsuit. Bodywork starts at $65; communal bath access, $22-$25.

this week in san francisco!
