Tasting Menus from a French Laundry Alum

Benu Opens in SoMa

benu restaurant san francisco!

There are few things you’re willing to wait for: the perfect parking space, the loss of your virginity, Jonas Brothers tickets.

Get ready for another: Benu, the new restaurant from French Laundry alum Corey Lee, opening in SoMa tomorrow. We hear prime-time reservations are already tough to come by, so you might want to try your luck now.

But here’s what you’ll see when you do get in: a meticulously designed space done in neutrals (plush gray carpeting and chairs, sleek black tables), with pops of color coming from a few pieces of art like a Diebenkorn in the main dining room. There’s also a private dining room that overlooks a garden, and an outdoor garden — perfect for an alfresco glass of wine pre- or postdinner.

Lee’s eight- to twelve-course tasting menus might include such extravagant dishes as caramelized anchovy gelee and his reinterpretation of thousand-year-old quail egg with black truffle. The equally lavish a la carte menu is more familiar (egg tagliatelle with chicken liver and tomato, Berkshire pork belly with sauteed lettuce).

Sound intriguing? You know what they say: Waiting is the hardest part.
