Between the rustic Italian-inspired fare, artisan cocktails, and soft-serve, most new restaurants feel like you’ve been there before (because you have).
For something different, head to Commonwealth, opening today in the Mission. There, chef Jason Fox (formerly of Bar Tartine) and the Mission Street Food team are serving innovative, nuanced food you won’t find elsewhere.
A six-course tasting menu might include corn custard (sea urchin, chorizo, lobster emulsion, jalapeno) and goat cooked in hay with fresh chickpeas, peppers, and yogurt. Sample a la carte options like compressed watermelon (tofu, nori, togarashi) and marrow-stuffed squid (tamarind pork, shelling beans, black garlic, cilantro). The interior design is as clean as the food, with a minimalist bent (a light hickory bar, gunmetal banquette, hanging orb lights).
And, unlike the rest of the herd, Commonwealth donates $10 from every tasting menu to a local charity. Outdoor fundraisers are in the works, too. Talk about sharing the wealth.
Commonwealth, 2224 Mission Street, at 18th Street (415-355-1500 or commonwealthsf.com).
