Your New All-Day Mission Hangout

The Summit Restaurant Opens

the summit san francisco!

Since you started doing Pilates at home (recession resolution) and the fall TV premieres jammed up your DVR, you’ve been spending most of your time in your pad and cube.

The Summit, a new restaurant-slash-coffee-hangout from the former owner of Poleng Lounge, opens just in time this Thursday. With a vibe that reminds us of a gathering place for cool engineers, it’s vying for status as your new third space, outside home and work.

Housed in the i/o Ventures spot in the Mission, the warmly industrial interior has sleek wood communal tables, an L-shaped couch for sipping Blue Bottle coffee (served all day), and a long bar outfitted with metal stools. The 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. (most nights) menu from Poleng and Orson alum Eddie Lau starts with breakfast breads and continues with lunch salads and sandwiches (open-face fig-and-corn croque monsieur). Dinner sees homey entrees like 4505 Meats’s chicken beer sausage with creamy grits and roasted tomatoes.

A gallery and library of zines, graphic novels, and indie books is in the works. After all, they can’t call you a couch potato if it’s someone else’s couch.

The Summit, 780 Valencia Street, between 18th and 19th Streets (415-861-5330 or thesummit-sf.com).
