New England, home to the highest concentration of boat shoes, woven belts, flipped collars, and clam bakes, has dominated the prep-style scene for decades. Finally, there’s a little West Coast competition.
Portland-based accessories designer Nick Everett spent years crafting the custom fabric found on sailboats and motor yachts. An expert at sewing heavy canvas and applying marine hardware, he looked to transform his coastal aesthetic into goods for landlubbers (luggage, wallets, etc.).
The resulting Vanport Outfitters line is our new go-to for durable, all-American bags. Choose from a primary color-blocked beach sling with dock line strap (for cinching) or the Asa Lovejoy convertible backpack (make a few minor buckle adjustments and voila — leather-trim tote).
For an everyday revamp, we recommend replacing your beaten work bag with the unisex Francis Pettygrove satchel (pictured): chrome-tanned leather and brass rivets on the outside, Mac laptop divider and multiple interior pockets on the inside. Throw in the matching iPad case, and you’re prepped.
