Spotting a new kid-friendly indoor activity can seem as rare as a sighting of the Loch Ness Monster.
That’s why we were reeled in by local artist Manette Garrison’s Make Your Own Sea Monster Collage Kit. The simple eleven-by-seventeen-inch book is filled with ocean-dweller body parts — bodies slick or scaly, mouths ringed with fangs or fish lips, and feet in webbed and slipper forms. Each piece is meant to be painted or colored, cut out, and then collaged onto the blank back of the book. (Embellishing with beads, sequins, or string is strongly encouraged.)
Garrison thinks that giving kids different components to choose from broadens the possibilities and strengthens their imaginations.
Now that’s deep.
Available at Paxton Gate’s Curiosities for Kids, 766 Valencia Street, between 18th and 19th Streets (415-252-9990 or paxtongate.com), $28.
