Embarcadero

Ever since the Ferry Building rebranded itself the country’s major culinary destination, the Embarcadero has been revitalized in more ways than one. Upscale restaurants and wide open sidewalks draw both locals and tourists —and the incredible waterfront views don’t hurt.

Hi Dive

Pier 28 1/2 415-977-0170

Unlike most of the hoity-toity spots along the waterfront, Hi Dive is a straight-up bar for guys’ guys and the girls who love them. Cheap brews (especially at happy hour), passable bar food, sweet views, and a rowdy crowd always make for a good time.

The Slanted Door

This bustling Vietnamese restaurant located in the Ferry Building serves some of the best food in San Francisco. Reservations are tough, but you can always hover at the bar where it’s first come, first served. Only a crazy person would miss the Shaking Beef.

Waterbar

399 The Embarcadero 415-284-9922

Take in views of the bay as you feast on seasonal live shellfish at this eatery. The wine list has hundreds of bottles, and the bar’s got the requisite handcrafted cocktails, too. Take a peek at the nineteen-foot aquarium columns and a glass-blown “caviar” chandelier.

Pier 1.5 The Embarcadero 415-397-8880

Peruvian restaurateur Gastón Acurio delivers his inspired global gastronomy in a spacious, breezy spot situated in a former ferry terminal — complete with palm trees, Peruvian music, and, of course, ceviche galore.

Visiting foodies practically drop to their knees weeping when they see the bounty of artisanal produce, baked goods, and more. There are also some beloved local restaurants (Boulette’s Larder, The Slanted Door) and, of course, one of the best farmers markets in the country.
