While the masses are elbowing their way through Bumbershoot, we’ll be chilling out elsewhere this Lazy, er, Labor Day.
HEAD SOUTH
Willamette Valley, Oregon
Cozy In: The Allison Inn & Spa in Newberg has amenities such as large suites with private balconies and vineyard views, luxurious linens, and a serious spa with treatments not found closer to home. Travel + Leisure recently called it one of the best resorts in the United States.
Fill Up: Seattle transplant Eric Bechard serves upscale farm-to-table-obsessed fare at his acclaimed McMinnville restaurant, Thistle.
Head Out: Test your fitness during the annual Oregon Wine Country Half Marathon (or, better yet, just cheer for someone else) and then head out to discover your favorite pinot noirs among the 200-plus boutique and independent wineries in the valley.
Cool Off: Enjoy a nightcap at the lauded rooftop bar atop McMinnville’s charming brick McMenamins Hotel Oregon.
HEAD NORTH
Methow Valley, Washington
Cozy In: Designed by Seattle architect Tom Kundig, the Rolling Huts at Wesola Polana are a modern — and indoor — alternative to traditional tent camping.
Fill Up: The weekly changing menu at Winthrop’s Arrowleaf Bistro offers seasonal options such as roasted duck breast, rosemary-rubbed grass-fed lamb chops, and beet salad.
Head Out: Rent gear, guides, and anything else you need for horseback riding, fly-fishing, biking, hiking, boating, or golfing at the sprawling Sun Mountain Lodge.
Cool Off: Take some handmade confections from Sheri’s Sweet Shoppe after scoring a scoop or two at the outdoor ice cream stand.
And say goodbye to summer.
