Like most Seattleites, you would never give up your tall sugar-free, triple-shot, extra-dry, no-foam soy lattes, but your recent obsession with Downton Abbey gives you a hankering for a spot of tea. Here’s where to fill your cup.
Old-World Elegance
It’s pinkies up at The Georgian inside The Fairmont Olympic Hotel (Monday-Friday, 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.; Sat., noon-2:30 p.m.; Sunday, noon-4 p.m.). Soaring ceilings, twinkling chandeliers, and plush carpets are merely a backdrop for the finer finger sandwiches in life. It’s also the only place in town you can get away with wearing a fascinator.
Fit for Royalty
Tea at Queen Mary Tea Room (Wednesday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.) is done the way your grandmother would have done it: silver trays, bone china, bowls of colored sugar, and a healthy dose of lace and chintz. Soak up a pot of almond cream black tea with crumpets, marmalade, quiche, and pastries until it’s time for a bit of a kip (a.k.a. nap).
Beyond Basic Black
Remedy Teas serves a casual tea all day (daily, 7 a.m.-11 p.m.) with cookies, sliced fruits, and Theo chocolates. There are more than 150 organic selections — including matcha green tea, tea lattes, and chai — in case Earl Grey and chamomile don’t get your taste buds buzzing.
Like the Italians Do
The Brits aren’t the only afternoon tea drinkers. Try an Italian-style service at La Romanza (Saturday and Sunday, 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m.) and choose from 70 tea blends to pair with Venetian finger sandwiches and Caprese salad. Polish it off with a lemon tart.
When in Seattle.
