Capitol Hill’s Hot New Foodie Spots

Meet the whole gang — Cone & Steiner, Tallulah’s, and Hello Robin

There’s a new buzzworthy corner in the neighborhood. Hint: It’s not on Broadway or the Pike/Pine corridor. Some of the biggest players in the Seattle food scene have converged at the intersection of 19th Avenue East and East Mercer Street.

Meet your neighbors.

Tallulah’s
Linda Derschang’s fifth Capitol Hill venture is a comfortable, sunshine-filled cafe with a simple, seasonal menu and a focus on veggies. Pendant lights, leather booths, and an oversize clock behind the bar reflect Derschang’s love of midcentury modern design. Share small plates of twice-baked sweet potato with maple creme fraiche and grilled chicken skewers with crispy sage leaves, or order heartier fare like the lamb burger with zucchini fries. Sip cocktails on tap and brunch on dishes such as lemon ricotta pancakes, corned beef hash and eggs, and a wild mushroom omelet with crispy onions.

cone & steiner!

Cone & Steiner
The neighborhood general store and aims to fill the gap between mini-mart and gourmet market. Glass jars brimming with old-fashioned sweets line the countertop; five local beers are on tap, with growlers to go. Edibles include sandwiches, local cheeses, produce, and sundries. Head down the aisles and you’ll find all the basics — from fresh-cut flowers and bar provisions to linens, pet supplies for Spike Bonze, and a hardware section. There’s even a DIY station for grinding flour.

hello robin!

Hello Robin
When demand for Robin Wehl Martin’s famous whoopie pies and cookies got to be too much for her home kitchen, she opened this bakery with partner Molly Neitzel of Molly Moon’s Ice Cream. Inside the charming white and teal shop is a center island where you can sidle up and watch Wehl Martin whip up a batch of chocolate chip, oatmeal, or molasses cookies. Stretch your taste buds with flavors such as sweet onion and pecan, coconut curry, and habanero chocolate chip. Take home pints of ice cream now; come summertime, order a cone from the walk-up window scoop station.

It’s a new dawn.
