American Catwalk Debut: A Dress to Change the World
Designer Jeff Garner, who draws inspiration from Civil War-era tailoring, presents the stateside runway debut of his coed collection under the Prophetik label.

DC State Fair
Jockey for blue ribbon bragging rights at this homegrown talent show, part of the Barracks Row Fall Festival.
Why: Categories include the expected (best honey, knitting, brew) and should-be-classic (tastiest tomato, funkiest looking vegetable).
When: Sat., 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
Where: 8th St. SE, south of Eastern Market Metro.

National Book Festival
More than 100 authors, including Mario Vargas Llosa and Jeffrey Eugenides, bring their words to life in pavilions such as Fiction & Mystery, History & Biography, and Sci-Fi Fantasy.
Why: It’s Coachella organized by the Dewey Decimal System.
When: Sat., 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m.; Sun., noon-5:30 p.m. (rain or shine).

Downtown Hyattsville Arts Festival
The historic district hosts a street party with more than 100 artists displaying their wares (including jewelry by MICA-grad Marisa Rand of Skullery).
Why: An ideal reason to pause for a liquid lunch at Franklin’s — soup of the day and a house-brewed beer.
When: Sat., 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
Where: 5331 Baltimore Ave., at the intersection of Baltimore Ave. (Rte. 1) & Jefferson St., Hyattsville.

Paella Festival
José Andrés invites chef Raphael Vidal (of Restaurante Levante in Valencia) to craft seven varieties of the Spanish national dish.
