Our Editors Share Their Neighborhood Haunts

New spots in Silver Lake, Venice, West Hollywood, and more

dailycandy editors' favorite neighborhood haunts!

It’s the freakin’ weekend, and (thankfully) it’s a long one. Sit back and relax as our editors chart a course of R&R from the Pacific Ocean to the 5 Freeway.

See you at happy hour.

Mid-City/Beverly Hills
Evelyn C., L.A. editor
Warm up: Start the night off on a sweet note with a spiked milk shake at LACMA’s sleek and shiny new coffeehouse, C+M. Curb hunger pangs with a bacon and date Pop-Tart.
Main course: Splurge like a movie star at the newly reopened Spago. The veal filet mignon tartare followed by Wagyu short ribs is what carnivorous dreams are made of.
Next level: Kick it old school with a round of Pabst at Canter’s Deli’s Kibitz Room. Matzo balls and skater dudes not your scene? Head across the street to Rosewood Tavern for Scotch and twentysomething swingles.

Venice
Andrea A., contributor
Warm up: Fuel up with a flat white (Aussie-style cappuccino) at Deus ex Machina. Ogle the goods: custom-designed vintage motorcycles, hand-shaped surfboards, and the boys who ride them.
Main course: Head to Oscar’s Cerveteca for grilled salmon tacos and a glass of cava. Order extra Mama’s salsa for chips. Delicioso.
Next level: You can’t really go wrong at Axe. Start with spicy nuts and olives and the shaved radicchio and arugula (it’s all about the crispy onions) before moving on to a brown rice bowl with seasonal veggies and tofu. Ruin everything with a gooey, warm brownie and ice cream for dessert.

Silver Lake/Echo Park
Jaclyn B., writer
Warm up: Let the vino-savvy staff pick your poison to accompany a round of predinner bites at newly revamped City Sip LA.
Main course: Follow the Daily Dozen (bivalves, that is) with grilled mussels in a jar and sparkling pinot noir at L&E Oyster Bar. Bonus points for free deep-fried nuggets of heaven (a.k.a. hush puppies).
Next level: Find a dark corner to people-watch and sip French 77s and old-fashioneds at Bar Stella, then stop by the late-night happy hour at Mohawk Bend for cheap drinks and a booze-fueled photo booth session.

Downtown
Jessica L., writer
Warm up:
Ease into the evening with a Sussudio (gin, ginger ale, lemon) and steak tartare at Kitchen Table. It’s not your customary pairing, but the rustic rooftop seating ties everything together.
Main course: Nosh on fried chicken rolls and vegan torta (washed down with malbec) at Blue Cow. Invite friends to justify ordering a stack of fresh fusion plates.
Next level: Polish off the night with Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA at Los Angeles Brewing Company or bartender’s choice cocktails at spicy speakeasy The Varnish.

West Hollywood/Hollywood
Genie F., intern
Warm up: Unwind with a pint and an order of Welsh rarebit at The Pikey.
Main course: The baby kale/tatsoi salad at Laurel Hardware does not disappoint, but the real specialties reside behind the bar (one Gangster, please).
Next level: Head to Pour Vous for decadent cocktails (the De Pêche Mode is a must) served amid a deliciously French ambiance.
