Sausage Fest

A. Litteri Italian Market

D.C. Myth #257: There are sharks in the Potomac.

That you actually believed it was a little embarrassing. But, look at it this way, at least you won’t get fooled again.

Like by the claim that you can’t get a good Italian sausage in this town.

Prove that one wrong by heading over to A. Litteri. Over 75-years-old, the grocery store carries all sorts of culinary delights from the Bel Paese: Italian pork sausages made fresh three times a week, more than 30 kinds of olives (stuffed with blue cheese, gorgonzola, and anchovies), and a phenomenal selection of wine. They even make fantastic subs (try the cold-cut combo of capicola, prosciutini, salami, mortadella, and provolone).

The charmingly old-school space has floor-to-ceiling shelves, a simple deli counter, and the friendly and attentive presence of third-generation owner Mike DeFrancisci. Which means you’ll immediately feel right at home — despite what you’ve been told in the past about its rough warehouse district location.

As if you need another reason not to believe everything you hear.

A. Litteri, 517-519 Morse Street NE, between 5th and 6th Streets (202-544-0183).
