Head over Heels

The High Heel Races

It’s that time again. Time to dust off your platforms, fluff your purple wig, and call your favorite drag queen. This year, you’re actually going to catch the High Heel Race on 17th Street, instead of just reading about it the next day.

So here’s the drill: The fabuloso parade starts at 7 tomorrow night. The actual race starts at 9 p.m. (and is over by 9:03). It’s a big night for the neighborhood, and the locals are planning accordingly. You should, too.

Hank’s Oyster Bar: Normally closed on Tuesdays, but open for the parade. Best vantage point: the outdoor patio (1624 Q Street, at 17th Street; 202-462-4265).

Fox and Hounds: See ya, patio furniture. Hello, keg stands (1533 17th Street, at Q Street; 202-232-6307).

Dupont Italian Kitchen: Pre-game starts at 4 p.m. with $2 vodka drinks. Karaoke begins right after the race (1637 17th Street, at R Street; 202-328-3222).

Komi: Where the grown-ups go for reservations and the safety of the big front window (1509 17th Street, at P Street; 202-332-9200).

JR’s Bar and Grill: Hey! A beer tent! And proceeds benefit local charities! Another round! (1519 17th Street, between Q and P Streets; 202-328-0090) .

While you’re planning ahead, you may as well rehearse your calling-in-sick excuse for Wednesday.
