Chain Gang

Chains are all too often a symbol of bondage and restraint. And, no, not in a good way.

But Paula Mendoza sees things differently. The local jewelry designer incorporates metalwork into her designs with results that are downright liberating.

One pair of earrings brings together elegant hoops and a loose web of silver links. Another is a cluster of perforated bronze squares. A necklace is formed with knots of delicate gold chain and tiny garnet and citrine stones. And a bracelet is a ring of coins and gold spiral discs.

Combining delicate metals and semiprecious stones, the pieces add style and a hint of flirtation to a work-appropriate jacket-skirt combo but just as easily dress up jeans and a tee.

Thus Mendoza has created a new meaning for chains: one that’s loose, free, and very day into night.

And, no, not in a bad way.
