While everyone else is out apple picking and leaf gazing, you’re at home on the couch picking through fashion magazines, gazing at the faux-fur bustier/leather legging combo on page 159. Don’t fall for this season’s traps. Choose something better (more straightforward, less victim-y) from Yumi Kim. The NYC designer’s collection is totally appropriate for your life (not the life of the tuxedo shirt-clad model riding an elephant on page 109). Pair a simple kimono dress (in a subtle blue and pink floral print) with tights and demure jewelry for the office or kick it up with heels and layered chains for Saturday night. The simple Swiss dot blouse with delicate ruffled cuffs does right by your best pair of jeans or your favorite suit. A classic blue and gray plaid wool coat will keep you warm on chilly days. Of course, all of this supposes that you get out and enjoy the season. Rather than just dog-earring it. Available at Sugar, 1633 Wisconsin Avenue NW, between Reservoir Road and Q Street (202-333-5331).
