Designer Shannon Ely-McGregor shares your sentiment. Her clothing line, Mixie, successfully unites elements from around the globe and different eras.

The spring collection features sweet, soft dresses and tops that combine modern and vintage silhouettes with bold colors and pretty patterns: a strapless dress with a purple and black abstracted floral design (party Hawaiian style, circa-1984!); a demure shift with a lacy neckline (hello, 1940s garden party hostess); and a cheery printed top with rickrack (hippie clambake, here you come).

The pieces are so full of spirit, you’ll want to create an event around what you’re wearing: Perhaps the clothes make the plan.

Though it’s probably best not to mix metaphors.
