In the world of all things Belgian, what do you think of first? Chocolate? Or maybe beer?
Mel en Stel may not be the next thing on that list, but with the clothing line’s inventive details and Belgian sensibility, it could be soon.
Designer Ilse Eriksson began sewing at the age of 12 because it was a requirement at her Catholic boarding school. She found turning a flat piece of cloth into a wearable garment fascinating, and the rest is sartorial history.
The fabric itself is still what drives Eriksson’s inspiration. Hence the crisp, clean lines of each piece, softened by accents like full sleeves and purposefully placed gathering. The vintage-meets-modern style of the khaki raincoat with playfully detailed pockets make you feel like a walking piece of art (while still keeping you dry, of course). And hey, choosing between that and the simple silhouette of the fitted, striped wrap blouse won’t be easy.
We don’t blame you if you waffle.
Available at Pink November, 1529 Wisconsin Avenue NW, between P and Q Streets (202-333-1121). To see styles, go to melenstel.com.
