Four score and 152 years ago, we kicked Britain’s ass.
They’ve been trying to come back ever since. (Nice try, Spice Girls.)
But CommonWealth, the new Columbia Heights gastropub from Jamie Leeds (Hank’s Oyster Bar), may just be their ticket.
The hearty menu, which uses local farm fare, serves Brit faves like beer-battered fish and chips; an array of pots, pies, and pasties; Yorkshire pudding; a weekly Sunday roast; and classics with a twist, like smoked tofu shepherd’s pie.
Gather a group for a feast at the communal table or keep it casual on the leather banquette. Try a selection of more than 40 beers from the UK and commonwealth states (including Prince Charles’s Duchy Originals Organic English Ale).
And let the recolonization begin.
CommonWealth, 1400 Irving Street NW, at 14th Street (202-265-1400).
