French Twist

1905 Bistro Opens

Stirrup pants, corsets, and wooden teeth are a few old things that will thankfully never be new again.

For a decidedly more enjoyable retro discovery, try cozy French bistro 1905.

From the looks of things, the dining room could well have been a bar car on the Orient-Express. Gothic chandeliers and eclectic furnishings (hello, repurposed locker room benches) fit perfectly in the intimate Victorian boho space.

The menu is just as eclectic, with selections ranging from French classics (croque monsieur on a rich brioche) to clever innovations (fried oyster ratatouille with tomato butter) — and Sunday mornings will soon mean irresistible beignets.

The gorgeous copper-topped bar is fully stocked with enough French beers, wines, and absinthe to tame a Versailles court.

That corset might come in handy after all.

1905, 1905 9th Street NW, between T and U Streets (202-332-1905 or 1905dc.com).
